<![CDATA[Salvemos Mar Brava - versión español]]>
Chile’s Chiloé Island and its surrounding waters serve as a crucial feeding ground for blue whales of the southern hemisphere, a migratory route for several bird species, and are a key area for the critically endangered southeast population of southern right whales. It also holds one of the oldest archeological sites of native communities of the Americas
However, the long-term conservation of the area is under threat due to the planned construction of a mega wind farm project that seeks to build more than thirty 90-meter high wind turbines on the coast line of Mar Brava, one of the richest zones of costal biodiversity in Chile. Although renewable energy resources are a great alternative to reducing the consumption of fossil fuels, they can also have a negative environmental impact if not suitably located.
iLCP was invited to Chiloé to document the situation by the Chilean NGO Centro de Conservación Cetacea, iLCP Fellow Chris Linder’s images are serving to raise public awareness about the uniqueness of northwestern Chiloé, and the importance of the long-term conservation of its cultural and biological heritage. They are also being used to support a strong public campaign for the relocation of the mega wind farm project, and grant long term protection to the area from industrial development. We hope they can also help to highlight the need to adopt regulations and guidelines for renewable energy resources in Chile.

<![CDATA[Hunting for Volcanoes to Ski in Northern Patagonia]]>
Brody Leven is on a 3,000-mile road trip through Patagonia with nothing but his van, his skis, his filmer Adam Clark, and a burning desire to ski whichever mountains strike his fancy.

This week Brody is in the Lakes District of Northern Patagonia hunting volcanoes. Even in the spring and summer the weather here on the border between Chile and Argentina can be volatile -- something Brody learns the hard way when he hits a snowstorm and has only one snow chain between his four tires.

Despite the conditions and the stresses of life on the road, Brody pushes on and eventually finds some of the best lines he has ever skied on the sheer sides of the region's numerous, steaming volcanoes. He does, however, have to dodge an avalanche. Stay tuned next week for the descent into deep Patagonia.

After one experience in huge Patagonia, you get to see so many peaks and mountains that returning becomes a "must". That is how last winter we decided to go on an expedition to "Monte San Lorenzo", located in the Aysen region of Chile. A group of friends from Chile, skiers and snowboarders make there attempt to ski in the second highest peak in patagonia. As usual in this corner of the world, conditions are not easy. Ten days in the mountain and the wind only stops for a couple of hours, letting us enjoy the incredible landscapes and get some ski. Enough to consider the trip as successful. Much strength to the family & friends of the great skiers JP Auclair and Andreas Fransson, who passed away in this same mountain one week after our expedition.

At the end of the 2014 fishing season, five respected fly fishermen – Craig Mathews of Blue Ribbon Flies, Yvon Chouinard of Patagonia, Steve Hemkens of Orvis, Tim Romano of Angling Trade and Todd Tanner of Conservation Hawks – came together to fish for wild trout and share their thoughts on angling and climate change.
COLD WATERS was shot in Montana in October, 2014. It celebrates the joy and passion of fly fishing, and educates anglers on the threat we face from global warming. The film, which is a collaboration between Conservation Hawks and the cinematic team at Conservation Media, focuses on our responsibility to protect cold, clean waters and healthy landscapes, and to stand up for future generations of Americans.
Because climate change is the single largest threat to our future, the COLD WATERS film was made with unprecedented support from the fly fishing industry.
