Mirror - It will be some hours before the sun is over the yardarm. It has barely risen and the morning light still has a golden glow. I haven't even had breakfast yet as I've been too busy getting acquainted with the penguins on Magdalena Island.

Journey to the End of the Earth

E Magazine - The wind arrives rudely, in the middle of the night, thrashing and tugging at the sides of my tent. The only logical option is to sink deeper into a nest of fleece sheets and heavy blankets of wool. The howling seems unending, but the tent stays steady and the gusts eventually disappear as abruptly as they hit. How fierce is the wind? My guide will shrug away the question during breakfast. This was a summer breeze compared to the 130 mph squalls that have been documented here.

Ethical Traveler - Jutting out from Argentina's east coast some 800 miles south of Buenos Aires, the oddly shaped piece of land known as Peninsula Valdés has become known as one of the best places in the world to observe the southern right whale. From May to December, close to 1,000 of these whales gather in the waters just off the coast of Chubut to reproduce, making this the prime time for whale-watching tours in the region.

Endangered Spaces: Can our Wildest Places Survive Tourism?

The Independent - Eco-tourism. Is this now-fashionable concept basically a contradiction in terms – on a par, as cynics might say, with "business ethics" or "compassionate conservatism"? "Adventure travel" is, of course, a concept as old as the hills, even if some of our greatest adventurers, such as Captain Scott, took great pains to proclaim their serious scientific purposes.

Patagonia: Try a Chilean Adventure

E-mail Print
The Independent - Chilean Patagonia's position as a natural playground for all things active is perfectly summed up by the Wenger Patagonian Expedition Race. It challenges competitors to up to 800 miles of kayaking, trekking and mountain-biking in some of the most impressive scenery known to man. But while the athletes who take on the endurance race every year may seem superhuman, the activities involved can offer any adventure traveller the opportunity to understand what wilderness is all about at a more leisurely level.
