Yelcho River, My Dear Yelcho

Two weeks ago, I returned to my favorite region, the Yelcho River and lake basin. This is an extraordinary area of southern Chile, and not just for its beautiful scenery and its endless forests and glaciers, but also for its incredible fishing. It is perhaps one of the very best fishing spots in the world. The issue here is how and with whom to go. It is not easy to get to Yelcho -- there are usually few services and they are fewer still after the Chaiten volcano eruption. Today, its almost a totally unpopulated and isolated place.

Trout Fishing and the Weather

Have you wondered why are there some years when fishing in a place appears wonderful, out of this world, and then without explanation there are years in which in the same place there is difficult or poor fishing the entire season? In general, and for many this is anecdotal, it constitutes a mystery that is also an attraction which gives fishing a special spice.  But there are also those like me who need more information on the subject, and want to know how to interpret it. These lines are specifically meant to help those like me who want to understand more about these variations.

Francisco Castaño, originally from Santiago, got a degree in business administration from Diego Portales University in the mid-1980s and worked as an executive in several companies. But his growing passion for fly fishing eventually won out, and in 1999 he moved to southern Chile and Puerto Varas to start up Tres Piedras, a full-service fly fishing agency. Since then, he has guided clients all over Chilean Patagonia. One of Chile's first-ever certified fly fishing guides, he is also an expert skier, white water kayaker and active in river conservation issues.
