Erratic Rock

erratic rock patagonia is well-known for its extensive range of activities, from trekking to world class rock climbing and mountaineering. Most of our programs are on the Chilean side of Patagonia, covering all of Argentine Patagonia as well. The programs focus on fun, safety and outdoor education. Exceptional guides and top athletes have been collected from all over the world to lead programs that allow you to live the diversity of Patagonia. From the 2,424 square kilometers of Torres del Paine, to Cabo Froward’s remote tip of South America, to the extreme environments of Isla Navarino and Cape Horn, we offer more adventure and expedition possibilities than anyone could possibly experience in one season.

Founded in 2004 by Bill Penhollow and Rustyn Mesdag, erratic rock has established a tradition of high quality service and personal interest in every customer. Our clientele is wide ranging--including backpackers and climbers, students and do-it-yourself outdoor enthusiasts, college outdoor departments, team-building groups and world travelers (vip and/or dirtbag). With a very apparent lean towards environmentalism, the owners and staff do their best to help and educate travelers about the principles of Leave No Trace, recycling while abroad and remaining repectful of the local nature and population.

Owners Rustyn and Bill created erratic rock to meet the needs of trekkers and climbers in Patagonia. These needs included comfortable, clean accommodations with English speakers on staff; service stemming from a simple understanding of travelers aboard; a guide service serving all levels of experience and budget, a equipment rental center catering to international trekkers and climbers in Patagonia.

By 2005 erratic rock was the number one listed hostel in many South American travel guides including; The Lonely Planet, Fodor’s and Moon’s. Owner’s Mesdag and Penhollow needed to expand the erratic rock philosophy in order to meet the overwhelming demand.

erratic rock now offers two hostel accommodations in Puerto Natales. Accomodations span from the traditional backpackers hostel, to upscale, private, couples accommodations. The Rental Center offers gear for camping, trekking, and climbing. Guide services include personalized outings in Patagonia and bookings on various excursions and, most importantly, the Free Daily Information Seminar.
erratic rock is the only information center that offers this service to the eager crowds of adventurers who arrive in Patagonia. erratic rock has become the information and jumping point for climbing expeditions in and around Torres del Paine.

It is clear why word has spread across the southern hemisphere about erratic rock, word of mouth, backpacker to backpacker.... Come experience one of the last great adventure destinations in the world, ..
